Old 2 Gold At Notre Dame

When: Saturday, May 24, 2008, 7 am to 11 am
Where: Notre Dame Stadium, Notre Dame University, South Bend, IN

As students move out of the Notre Dame residence halls in the spring, they often leave behind items they no longer wish to keep. Rather than just throw those items away, Notre Dame University gathers these items up, takes them to the stadium, and sells them. They then distribute the proceeds from the sale to local charitable organizations. It's like taking old stuff and turning it into gold for those charities. Therefore, they call the sale Old 2 Gold.

Notre Dame needs lots of help to make this sale possible. People are needed to pick the items up from the student dorms and bring them to the stadium, to sort and price them, to be cashiers, baggers, and security on the day of the sale, and to clean up afterwards.

That is where NAMI comes in.

Local organizations can send volunteers to help with the sale. For each hour worked, Notre Dame will give a share of the sale proceeds to their organization.

NAMI St. Joseph County is again looking for volunteers to help with the Old 2 Gold sale this year. Last year we raised over $1,900 for our affiliate.

For more information on the Old 2 Gold sale at Notre Dame, click here.

The jobs you can volunteer for are:

  • Transportation: Transporting items from campus and area dorms to the Stadium for sorting and pricing.
  • Material Handling: Moving gaylords and pallets during O2G set-up using a pallet jack.
  • Sorting/Pricing: Lifting, folding, sorting and placement of items in final sale location, and placing price tags on sorted items.
  • Cashier/Cash Runner: Complete shopper’s transactions by accepting payment for purchases. Work with ND Security to transport excess cash from Cashiers to Cash Counting area.
  • Security: Monitor Cashier Stations, escort Cash Runners from Cashiers to Cash Counting Area, Monitor Entrances, Exits and Merchandise Pick-up area for security, and work with ND Security to monitor stadium entrances.
  • Baggers/Loaders: Bag items at Bagging Stations, assist with loading of vehicles.
  • Clean-up: Dispose of left over merchandise, dispose of trash, break down and remove tables, sweep up any debris.

WE WANT LOTS OF VOLUNTEERS AGAIN THIS YEAR!!

Volunteers are needed for item pick-up and sale set-up from May 1 to May 23, to work the sale on May 24, and to help clean up after the sale on May 27.

All Volunteers will be asked to attend one of the one-hour orientation sessions scheduled between April 28 and May 1, and to sign a waiver of liability. Volunteers will be given Old 2 Gold t-shirts. Refreshments are available to volunteers while they are working.

If you would like to volunteer, please go to the Old 2 Gold web site and click on the Info for Volunteers link on the left, or click here to go directly to the volunteer application.

Last year, our affiliate had over thirty volunteers and raised over $2,000! This year we'd like to do even better.

So SIGN UP NOW, and help Notre Dame and NAMI turn Old 2 Gold!
